An editorial comparison
AlorAir HD55S vs Santa Fe Compact70: gravity drain and service access
Compare two dedicated crawl-space candidates by documented capacity, exact model identity, cabinet access and the drainage plan.

The useful difference
Compact70 is the stronger documented starting point when you need the 70-pint warm-condition rating and a current placement manual. HD55S remains a candidate where its exact cabinet and drain setup meet the job. The evidence does not establish a universal value or reliability winner.

Keep HD55, HD55S and HD55P identities separate
This page compares the HD55S profile with Compact70, not the distinct HD55 listing or pump-equipped HD55P. Manufacturer pages sometimes mix names, so match the rating plate, refrigerant and supplied document. Compact70 here is current part 4044110. A review carrying the same product name may describe an older version and cannot settle current accessories or dimensions.
A capacity difference at stated warm conditions
HD55S records 55 pints/day and Compact70 70 at 80°F/60% RH. That is a meaningful manufacturer-rating difference, but not a test of both machines in the same home. Compact70 also supplies a cooler-condition rating in the table; no matching verified HD55S reading is available here. Choose a needed moisture load and air-distribution plan before deciding how much margin to buy.
Shorter depth is not the same as lower installed height
The HD55S profile records a 19.2-inch depth and 13.3-inch height; Compact70 records 21 and 12 respectively. Compact70’s filter/return-side drawing asks for 11 inches and its supply side for 24, alongside general airflow instructions. HD55S numerical current-version service clearance is unresolved. Put hatch access, filter extraction and drain elevation on the same drawing rather than picking the smaller-looking product photograph.
Plan a continuously falling drain or a separate pump
Both profiles use gravity drainage. If the destination is uphill, include a compatible external pump and overflow-control arrangement in the quote. Compact70 instructions show space for a trap below the drain adapter. A working sump pit nearby does not automatically prove that the hose falls all the way to it or that the unit can remain level. Confirm the supplied hose, drain fitting and complete route.
What the external reviews can actually add
BobVila.com reports humidity reduction for an HD55S in a home crawl space, but does not identify the test unit’s production revision. Sylvane explains Compact70 outlet orientation and hanging accessories in an older retailer review. These are useful practical contexts, with different methods and commercial interests. They are not a side-by-side durability study or a reason to transfer historical readings into today’s specifications.

Article · measured test
HD55S in a home crawl space: humidity reduction and setup
Family context: Sentinel HD55S named; tested SKU, refrigerant and production revision not disclosed
The reviewer reports a crawl-space reading falling from 66% RH to 55% in less than 18 hours, then 52% at 24 hours. Gravity drainage was routed to a sump. The practical takeaway is to plan the drain and cabinet handling as carefully as the extraction rating; the reported result describes one home, not a guaranteed drying time.
- Setting / method
- Home crawl-space comparison; hygrometer readings and platform/sump drainage described. Ambient conditions were not held constant; no calibrated acoustic comparison reported.
- What this does not prove
- Affiliate publication. No specimen revision or raw measurement series. Other HD55 entries on the page are different named products. These observations do not establish current-R32 performance or long-term reliability.

Compact70 placement: rotatable outlet, hanging kit and controls
Earlier version / historical context: Compact70 described in March 2023; current part 4044110 equivalence not established
Sylvane describes rotating the discharge panel for vertical exhaust and using a separately purchased hanging kit between joists. The article also covers optional ducting and the onboard humidity dial. This is useful when planning access and accessories, but the installation still needs space for ducts, filter removal and a downhill drain. The retailer’s stated coverage is not a sizing guarantee.
- Setting / method
- Retailer editorial review with placement discussion and published specification tables; no repeatable test protocol or raw results supplied.
- What this does not prove
- The retailer sells this brand. The 2023 unit is not identified by current part number or refrigerant; measurements, warranty wording and accessory fit must be checked against current documents.
