Dehumidifier capacity: compare the conditions, not just the pints
Understand 55 vs 120 pints, cooler-air ratings and why capacity, operating temperature and square-foot coverage are different checks.

1. Two capacities can describe one machine
The current Sentinel HD55P listing gives 55 pints/day at 80°F / 60% relative humidity and 120 at 90°F / 90% RH. Those are two rating points for the same model, not evidence that it removes 120 pints in the conditions used for the 55-pint result. Always retain temperature, humidity and any stated test standard next to the number.
2. Start a comparison at matching temperature and humidity
Our current sources document the following rating points. A common temperature and humidity make a comparison more useful, but airflow, static pressure and the stated procedure can still differ. Where a standard is not established, we preserve that uncertainty instead of inventing equivalence.

3. A cooler room changes the buying question
Compact70 publishes 70 pints/day at 80°F / 60% RH and 43.7 at 65°F / 60% RH. The warmer result does not promise the same output in a cool basement. The source rounds that cooler rating to 43.7; the current manual registration gives 43.75. Keep the source’s precision rather than treating the two figures as different units.
Do not interpolate a missing cooler-temperature rating or transfer one model’s reduction to another. A missing point stays unverified.
4. Operation at a temperature is not output at that temperature
An operating range and a capacity rating answer different questions. The operating range indicates the documented conditions in which the equipment can work. It does not quantify water removal at the lowest temperature. Check the minimum inlet-air temperature separately, especially for an unheated basement or crawl space.
5. Square-foot coverage is not a universal sizing formula
Area alone does not specify the moisture load. Ceiling height, outside-air leakage, water entry and the building’s moisture controls can change the situation. Compact70’s current sheet uses different ceiling-height assumptions for crawl-space and basement area claims. Two spaces with the same floor area can therefore need different installation assessments.
- Record space type, area and ceiling height.
- Record the actual inlet-air temperature and humidity conditions.
- Describe water entry, outside-air leakage and the existing moisture controls.
- Ask what assumptions support the proposed capacity, not only the area advertised on a listing.

6. Compare fit first, then ask the capacity question
A higher rating does not make a unit fit a short shelf, a rising drain or an unsupported duct arrangement. Build the installation shortlist first. Then compare capacity points, current-generation evidence and the installer’s moisture-load assumptions. Keep uncertainty visible rather than converting unrelated data into a single score.
