Crawl-space dehumidifier installation: measure the complete fit
A practical checklist for cabinet dimensions, filter access, airflow, drain fittings and the exact model generation.
7 minute read · Checked Oct 11, 2026
1. Separate the cabinet from the installation envelope
Measure the access opening, each turn on the carrying route and the final position. Then add the space for airflow, filter removal, controls and drain fittings. An advertised 12-inch height describes a cabinet, not permission to place the unit in a 12-inch slot. Measure the narrowest point, not the easiest point.

- Measure the hatch width and height, turns and carrying route.
- Record the final available width, height and depth.
- Locate the filter door and the side from which it will be removed.
- Reserve the inlet, outlet, drain fitting and control access from the exact manual.
2. Compare dimensions with the same inclusions
The published AprilAire cabinet dimensions exclude feet, filter doors and duct collars. Ultra70 lists a 28-inch depth including collars and a 22-inch body without them. Those measurements describe different envelopes; do not compare them as though all accessories were included.
| Model | Height × width × depth | What to allow for |
|---|---|---|
| AprilAire E080 / E100 base | 15 × 14 × 26 | Feet, filter doors and duct collars excluded. |
| Santa Fe Compact70 4044110 | 12 × 12 × 21 | Add the airflow, filter and drain envelope. |
| Santa Fe Ultra70 4044100 | 12 × 12 × 28 with collars | Body depth without collars: 22 inches. |
A matching cabinet dimension is the first check. It is not a complete installation approval.
3. Leave usable filter and service access
The AprilAire E080/E100 combined manual specifies 15 inches for filter access on either side. Ultra70 Rev C shows 13 inches for filter access on either side. Access must remain available after hoses, ducts and nearby objects are installed. Think through pulling the filter out, replacing it and removing the cabinet for repair.
- Decide which side will be used for filter removal.
- Include any stand, suspension kit and secondary pan in the final position.
- Keep the service side reachable for controls, electrical and drain checks.
4. Do not resolve conflicting clearance instructions by guessing
Compact70 TS-2081 Rev C shows 11 inches on the return/filter side and 24 inches on the supply side, while its general safety text says a minimum of 1 foot for airflow. Ultra70 has a similar difference between the detailed airflow diagram and general text. These conflicts are reasons to obtain clarification for the actual installation, not to select the smallest number.
We do not turn a conflicting diagram into a guaranteed clearance filter. Check the instructions supplied with your exact part and ask the manufacturer or installer to resolve the difference.
5. Trace the drain before choosing a location
Draw the proposed route from the outlet to an approved drain destination, including every rise. A trap or pump can change the mounting height and service envelope. Santa Fe Compact70 and Ultra70 require drain traps; AprilAire says E080/E100 do not require one for the unit itself, while an installer may have other reasons to include one. One brand’s drain diagram is not a universal template.

Choose gravity, built-in pump or external pump →6. Check temperature and capacity separately
An operating minimum tells you whether a unit is documented to operate, not how much water it will remove at that temperature. Record the lowest inlet-air temperature and the conditions next to each capacity rating. Do not replace a moisture-load assessment with the manufacturer’s largest coverage number.
Understand the capacity ratings →7. Prepare an installer handoff sheet
Put the exact part number, generation, manual revision, dimensions and drain destination on one page. Ask for an itemized plan that explains the unit, fittings, mounting, drainage, controls and commissioning checks. Our shortlist identifies candidates; this sheet makes the remaining installation decisions explicit.
- Exact model / part number and plug or hardwired variant.
- Current manual revision and the clearance questions still unresolved.
- Measured opening, carrying route and final installation envelope.
- Drain route, any pump model and a plan for overflow or pump failure.
- Air paths, controls and the capacity assumptions used by the installer.
