A buying decision, explained
Choosing a dehumidifier near a bedroom or living room
Interpret dB, dBA, bounds and ducted ratings, then check placement and external evidence before choosing near a living space.

The decision first
Choose around the sound at the occupied room and the installation route, not the smallest unsupported dB number. Compare measurement conditions, keep “less than” bounds intact and ask what placement, ducts and operating modes the evidence actually covers.
See the model checks below ↓Identify where sound could reach the occupied room
Sketch the cabinet location, shared floor or wall, any supply grille and the route of ducts. Fan noise, compressor operation and pump events are separate questions. A unit beneath a bedroom can present a different comfort problem from the same unit in a remote utility area. Decide when the room is occupied and which operating events would matter before selecting by a single published noise figure.
- Record the cabinet’s distance and structural relationship to the room.
- Identify grilles or ducts that could carry sound toward the room.
- Ask about compressor, fan-only and pump operation separately.
- Keep any proposed isolation or mounting compatible with the exact manual.

Read the number together with its method
dBA states frequency weighting; it does not supply measurement distance, room acoustics or mounting configuration. A ducted figure is not a prediction for an unducted cabinet directly beneath a bedroom. When distance and method are missing, keep that uncertainty visible. Our profiles preserve the source’s operator and conditions rather than turning every claim into an exact, comparable test.
| Claim | Recorded context | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| E080: 45 dBA | Manufacturer labels it ducted | Distance and acoustic method not supplied |
| E100: 55 dBA | Manufacturer labels it ducted | Not a room-specific sound prediction |
| HD55S: less than 52 dBA | Bound from current specification | Not an exact 52 dBA measurement |
| HD55P: differing claims | Listing and specification differ | No single quietness score is chosen |

Do not manufacture a quietness ranking
A less-than bound, an exact manufacturer value and a reviewer’s observation have different meanings. Do not subtract them to claim a precise advantage unless the measurement methods and configurations are comparable. Decibels also should not be described as a simple percentage of loudness. The purpose of the table is to reveal what is known and what to ask, rather than to award a universal quietest model from mismatched numbers.
A low published number with missing conditions does not establish the sound in your room.

Use reviews for placement evidence, not a transferred score
Look for the exact unit, where it was installed, how long it ran and whether the author measured sound or simply described it. An installation video can reveal a location or access issue without proving acoustic performance. An owner report may identify an annoying operating event but does not establish failure frequency. Our linked summaries preserve these distinctions and keep historical versions separate from today’s shipped equipment.

Inspect the HD55S external evidence and its limits →Evaluate placement options without blocking the machine
Moving a cabinet, choosing an approved duct arrangement or changing an approved mounting approach may be more relevant than choosing between two incomplete sound claims. Any proposed enclosure or insulation must still preserve airflow, heat rejection, drainage and service access. Ask the installer to explain the acoustic treatment as part of the permitted installation; do not hide the unit in a tight box simply to muffle it.

Compare standalone and ducted layouts →Define a comfort check before handover
If sound is a deciding factor, ask how it will be assessed at the occupied room with the intended operating arrangement. Include fan, compressor and pump events in that discussion, and identify the remedy if the chosen location is unsuitable. Check return conditions before purchase. Without matched measurements we leave the acoustic winner unresolved, while still helping you rule out a poor location or incomplete installation proposal.

These are documented starting points. Apply the limits above before treating any model as an installed fit.

AprilAire E080 →
Its current specification supplies a ducted sound claim and a documented installation layout.
Before choosing: The 45 dBA figure has no measurement distance and does not guarantee bedroom comfort.
Inspect the model evidence →
AlorAir Sentinel HD55S →
A linked field-test summary and a current bounded manufacturer sound claim are available.
Before choosing: The review and bound are different evidence types; neither is a universal quietness score.
Inspect the model evidence →
AprilAire E100 →
The current profile keeps the ducted 55 dBA claim with its missing method visible.
Before choosing: Capacity, placement and operating mode should be considered before any acoustic conclusion.
